Happy October, Lone Star Runners!
Last year we featured a “Runner of the Month” each month. One of the wonderful parts of becoming more involved with Lone Star Runners Club is getting to know some of the great volunteers that keep our club running smoothly. For the month of October, our spotlight runner is 52 year old Victoria Salas, Director of the McNair Scholars Program at WTAMU. Victoria is currently serving as Publicity Coordinator and Turkey Trot race director. Although she ran in jr. high and high school, she started running more seriously in the last 10 years to lose weight, and continues to run because she enjoys the exhausted yet accomplished feeling of running while others are sleeping. She is currently running about 10 miles a week, and has been a Lone Star Runners Club member for about 12 years.
Favorite Lone Star Runners Club race: Twilight, because she enjoys running at night.
Favorite race distance: 10K
Favorite race location: Although she has run half marathons in several states, one of her favorites was the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half in Seattle. This race featured different parts of the city, including a long, steep incline at the end of the race with an amazing hilltop view.
Favorite shoe: Brooks Ghosts. She feels that the shoes give her extra support, especially as a flat-footed runner.
Favorite running gear: She loves her Noxgear light vest for early morning or night running. She also must run with a baseball cap and earbuds- but only one, for safety.
Favorite music: 80s heavy metal.
Favorite podcasts: The Daily and Arnold’s Pump Club.
Favorite running workouts: Hill repeats.
Favorite cross training: Weight training.
Favorite running book: Runner’s World Run Less Run Faster: Become a Faster, Stronger Runner with the Revolutionary 3-Runs-A-Week Training Program by Bill Pierce and Scott Murr and Her Fearless Run: Kathrine Switzer’s Historic Boston Marathon by Kim Chaffee
Favorite running quote: “Run your own race” and “Hills pay the bills”.
A quote from Victoria: “It is important to remember to not stereotype runners- that is how we can grow the community.”
Victoria has been the director of Turkey Trot since about 2018, and was the Twilight director in the past, as well. The Turkey Trot is our biggest race that brings together families and friends for a great race. Volunteering as a race director is a lot of work, and Victoria puts together this race so well each year. We are so thankful to you, Victoria, and to each of the volunteers that have donated their time to our running community. Please reach out if you are interested in volunteering. For allowing us to feature her as our Runner of the Month, October Runner of the Month Victoria Salas will receive a pair of our LSRC socks.
Happy running!
