What A Run!

Thanks to all you runners who show up again and again, Lone Star Runners Club has been on an epic run in 2023!

It all began in the early Spring, when LSRC held its first St. Patty’s 7k at its new location, Pondaseta Brewing Company. Nearly 125 runners showed up to enjoy a cool weather run that began at Pondaseta, wound around through the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood, and ended at Pondaseta with great company, numerous prizes and lots of mid-morning breakfast burritos and beer! Special thanks to the Pondaseta crew for opening up just for us and serving as gracious hosts for hours after the race ended.

The primary objective of LSRC is “to promote the health and wellness of our community through the sport of running.” Our wellness mission took on an added dimension when LSRC partnered with the Coffee Memorial Blood Center to host a blood drive on June 13th. LSRC pledged and delivered a certain number of runners (and friends of runners) to donate blood for our community. The blood drive took place in the Colonies at the Church of the Nazarene in the mobile blood unit, and LSRC contributed enough blood to save many lives in our community. After the blood drive, donors joined together for snacks and drinks, though more enjoyed juice and water than beer (unheard of for LSRC gatherings)!

LSRC’s giving continued with two races to support local charitable causes. On May 27, LSRC Board Members Jeremy Head and Katie Rodriguez, and many volunteers they recruited, hosted more than eighty runners for the LSRC Wild West 4 and 8 mile run. The picturesque event started near the De Zavala Middle School and wound around through the Woodlands neighborhood. Runners enjoyed perfect weather, hills (where’d those come from?), views, and a good time with the many other runners. All profits from the race supported the Wild West Wildlife Rehab Center. Kudos to Jeremy, Katie and everyone who made this philanthropy possible.

Not to be outdone by anyone, Board Member Michael (Miguel to most of us) Renteria organized the Twilight Run on August 11 to support Storybridge. The Twilight Run began and ended at the Amarillo Town Club on Hillside, and the 5k race & 1 mile fun run wound around the Colonies at night. This event boasted 100 runners, and many families showed up to support the large number of young runners from the area.

Next year, Katie Rodriguez takes over as President. She is young, energetic, and full of great ideas. We hope you will continue to support LSRC and Katie with your participation in the events and by getting involved as well.
